Tony Attwood on Autism – Managing Anxiety

Charity the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health is proud to present leading authority on autism, Professor Tony Attwood, offering practical, accessible advice and tips for you and your child. In this session Tony looks at ‘Managing Anxiety’.
Why do autistic children and adolescents have high levels of anxiety? How can they moderate and manage anxiety? How can you help?
In this session you will learn the reasons for high levels of anxiety, including impaired Theory of Mind, sensory sensitivity, and cognitive profiles. Plus, how some behaviours associated with autism can be coping mechanisms for anxiety.
In addition, you will learn strategies for an emotion education programme to explore and communicate a range of feelings and thoughts associated with anxiety. Plus, discover how to encourage a range of emotion communication and regulation abilities.
