A care worker who was secretly recorded abusing a man with autism has been handed a suspended 12-month jail term.
Raja Khan, 29, was filmed dragging Ollie Hopton out of bed, poking him repeatedly and throwing imitation punches at the vulnerable young man.
Khan, whose prison term was suspended for 18 months, was also banned for life from working with vulnerable people.
In addition, he has to do 250 hours of unpaid work, 30 days of rehabilitation, and pay a £140 victim surcharge.
Mum became concerned
Ollie’s mother Caroline Hopton set up the camera after becoming concerned about her 20-year-old son.
The footage, recorded between July and September 2017, also shows Khan insulting Ollie and leaving him unattended in the bath.
Hopton, 56, from Windsor, said she was “happy” with the prison term, but disappointed it was suspended.
Ollie, who also has a severe learning disability, was being cared for at a home run by London Care Partnership in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey.
Care worker ‘terrified’ Ollie
Surrey Police’s investigating officer, detective constable Samantha Coleman, said Ollie was left so terrified by Khan’s behaviour he “would refuse to even get of bed”.
Earlier this month Khan, from Inwood Road in Hounslow, was found guilty of ill-treatment and wilful neglect at Guildford Crown Court.
Ollie is now back home, has recovered and is “loving life”, says Hopton.
The campaigning mother believes abuse in care is widespread.
She was recently involved in a fight to enable parents to continue making decisions for their learning-disabled children after they turn 18.
She is also fighting to end detentions in hospitals.
London Care Partnership is now owned by Elysium Healthcare.
The firm said that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rates all its homes as good or outstanding.
