Westmorland School, part of the specialist education and care provider Witherslack Group, is pleased to announce that it has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018–2021.
The school, in Chorley, Lancashire, earned the accolade for its use of technology to remove barriers to learning for pupils.
Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.
They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching and the school environment. They also have documented results of academic accomplishment.
Innovative and compelling
Head Teacher, Sue Asher commented: “I am thrilled with the news that we have been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School, highlighting our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment.
“A special thanks goes to our very own Computing Lead, Ruth Smith, who has been supported by our Deputy Head Teacher, Rob Lynas during the implementation of our programme and, as a result, the benefit to our pupils is measurable and has also given them great confidence.”
Westmorland School’s iPad-per-child programme
Westmorland School implemented an iPad-per-child programme. It allows pupils to work both individually and collaboratively for research tasks, to become independent learners and to develop critical thinking.
The development of the iPad programme has also given pupils the opportunity to develop as ‘digital leaders’ who share their expertise with others in lessons and break times.
The school’s use of technology has contributed to literacy development, increased productivity in lessons, development of fine motor skills and reduced numbers of interventions and withdrawals from lessons.
