The Theatre Royal’s family pantomime ROBIN HOOD will offer a ‘relaxed performance’ in January next year.

Visiting a new place can be daunting and can cause anxiety. The relaxed performance of ROBIN HOOD will provide an opportunity for people who may benefit from a less formal, more supportive atmosphere, to still experience the joy of live theatre.
Relaxed performances feature lower overall sound levels, less intense lighting and no pyrotechnics. There will also be an increased number of wheelchair spaces available at the front of the auditorium.
Designated quiet space
Throughout the show, the auditorium doors will remain open should audience members wish to move around. There is a designated quiet space set up in the foyer for the duration of the show where people can relax should they need to leave the auditorium.
The Theatre Royal’s access and education teams, in partnership with the pantomime’s cast and crew, work closely together to coordinate this special performance in order to encourage more families, schools and groups to be able to participate in and enjoy live theatre.
Supportive environment
The Theatre Royal’s Front of House Manager, Emily Malen, said “People coming to a relaxed performance can expect all the excitement of a standard performance but within a really supportive environment. In addition to the minor changes we make to the show and to the foyer spaces, we send out a Visual Story in advance with more detailed notes about the layout of the venue and facilities on offer so people can prepare for the sights and sounds of the experience.
“We can also provide notes for parents and carers to give specific content such as timings, information about the actors and characters they play, as well as a short synopsis about the show.
“It’s amazing how something as simple as this can greatly reduce anxiety and help everyone, including carers, to feel more comfortable about their visit to the theatre.”
