To reduce anxiety and create a supportive atmosphere, relaxed performances adapt the experience of going to the theatre in several ways.
These include adjusting light and sound levels, providing ‘chill-out’ areas, and demonstrating an embracing attitude towards audience noise and movement in the auditorium.
Huge choice
There are lots of shows with relaxed performances to choose from this autumn.
Discover classic Shakespeare at a relaxed performance of Macbeth, taking place at Shakespeare’s Globe on 17 October at 2pm.
Explore the long and embedded culture of British Asian History in The Empress at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre on 18 October at 1.30pm, or see theatre legend Ian McKellen in the new comedy Frank And Percy at The Other Palace on 19 October at 7.30pm.
Relaxed performances are also a great opportunity to introduce young people to the theatre. See Stick Man at Leicester Square Theatre on 12 November, or The Snow Queen at Polka Theatre on 24 and 25 November.
