St Mary’s are launching a post-19 provision in September.
It will provide individual pathways to supported employment and independent living for young adults with communication and other complex needs.
St Mary’s 19+ is a step up and a step away from the School and College, demanding a more university-like feel. The expert team of specialist staff allows 19+ to follow an integrated education, vocational, therapy and care curriculum and waking day.
The provision is differentiated to match the ambitions, needs and strengths of our young adults.
St Mary’s post-19 vision is to:
- Prepare our learners for a fulfilling life as an adult
- Create individual pathways to develop employability, independence, sociability and access to the community
- Provide exception specialist provision for young adults with speech, language, communication and other complex needs
St Mary’s 19+ offers:

- Horticulture and Land Management
- Retail
- Support programme for development of:
- Speech, language and communication
- Occupational Therapy, health and wellbeing
- Social opportunities and community access
Students follow City & Guilds, NVQ, ASDAN, Functional Skills, Supported Internships and other appropriate qualifications. St Mary’s selects these qualifications to match the needs of the learner.
St Mary’s post-19 location
St Mary’s 19+ is based at Sarson House in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex.
Sarson House is an attractive detached property which has modern spacious facilities to enable:
- effective delivery of the courses and curriculum offered
- easy access to the town for work experience and social opportunities
- homely accommodation that develops independent living skills
It is set over four floors and has numerous rooms, many of them spacious and some with sea views. It has high quality bedrooms with en suite facilities, and a wet room. There is a student kitchen, food tech suite and industrial kitchen. In addition there are classrooms, living and dining areas, therapy facilities, gym, utility rooms, laundry, offices, and accommodation for staff.
There is a lift and disabled access bedroom. It has a garden and parking.
Our vision is that learners will leave St Mary’s 19+ with a job in supported work This could be voluntary or involve earning money.
The Talking Trust is in the process of applying to the Care Quality Commission for approval of St Mary’s 19+. The new provision is being set up under existing governance and leadership, and the facilities proposed are currently used by St Mary’s School and College (part of The Talking Trust)for residential and education provision.
