As schools and colleges across the country return for another academic year, Ruskin Mill Trust reflect on an incredibly busy few months, not least because every Trust provision has remained open and operational during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.
Unique Practical Skills Therapeutic Education
So how has Ruskin Mill Trust been able to achieve such a sustained approach to learning and development of young people for over 30 years?
The answer lies in its unique, research based method of Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE).
With contextual components including the craft and land-based curriculum, practical workshop sessions, social enterprises, and outdoor learning environments, it’s easy to see how this flexible and uncompromising approach is well positioned to ride the storm, ensuring holistic development of its learners remain at the heart of what they do.
Now more than ever, as independent reports emerge regarding the number of students not able to access provision during this unprecedented period, Ruskin Mill Trust begins its academic year more determined than ever to fulfil its charitable objectives and support the SEND community.
A message from our founder
“Never before have the children, students, care givers, tutors, teachers, administrators and leaders of the Trust’s provisions been so open and engaged in ensuring that everyone’s wellbeing was assured during our current restrictions.
“Children and students have moved many learning opportunities outside into the natural world through our biodynamic gardens, farms, and woodlands. With the resplendent weather in April and May, these experiences were accompanied by warmth and light.
“In addition, the Trust’s care givers rose to the occasion in a heroic manner and sustained their commitment of support and care throughout this period. All the Trust’s centres have remained open with many wishes of goodwill and gratitude from parents, commissioners and extended families for doing so. This edition of Run of the Mill magazine is an account of the many experiences and achievements from this period.”
