Maple View School in Mackworth, Derby, celebrated two special occasions at the start of summer: the first anniversary of the opening of the school in 2020, and ‘Proud to Be Me’ Day.
Maple View students’ first day at the school was June 1st 2020. The planned opening was due to be April; however, due to the COVID pandemic this was pushed back. As a day and residential special school for children with autism, moderate to severe learning difficulties, speech, language & communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviour they have remained open throughout the pandemic.
Inflatable slide, drumming and even graffiti art
Staff and students had been looking forward to the celebration event for a while, and with the easing of restrictions, they were able to invite visitors from the SENAD Group head office to spend the day to celebrate with them.
The students enjoyed a bouncy inflatable slide, face painting, African drumming, a BBQ lunch and lots of other activities.
Graffiti artist Baby People also helped the students to create a piece of art to celebrate the first year of the opening of the school, which incorporates all the current students’ names.
As well as the anniversary of the school opening, they also celebrated ‘Proud to Be Me’ Day.
This was an opportunity for the children and staff to celebrate how we are all unique.
The children were encouraged to reflect on individuality and learn about differences and diversity.
For the event, the school had a non-uniform day and encouraged the children to wear clothing they love and feel represents their personality.
Proud of their success
All of the SENAD Group team are extremely proud of how successful the school has been during its first year, despite all the obstacles that the year has brought. This success is undoubtably down to the determination, dedication and hard work of all the staff and the students. We all look forward to a very successful a second year for the school.
