Leading team
Re:Cognition Health’s private Autism clinic is co-led by two highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrists, Dr Dimitrios Paschos, an expert in autism and other neuro-developmental conditions; and Dr Maite Ferrin, an expert in Paediatric ADHD and in treating children and adolescents with all types of mild and more severe psychiatric conditions.
Dr Paschos and Dr Ferrin are supported by a multi-disciplinary team with specialist expertise in child & adolescent neuro-psychiatry, general paediatrics, psychology and speech-and-language therapy. The child and adolescent specialists work in collaboration with children and their families to provide bespoke treatment plans to ensure the best possible outcomes for children with autism.
As with all health conditions, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis as early as possible. The earlier the intervention, the more successful the outcome could be, as early intervention has a really important impact on the trajectory of a child’s future.
Early intervention programme for children’s autism
In 2017, Re:Cognition Health was delighted to be the first clinic in the UK to launch the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). This is an evidenced-based, early-intervention programme used to help treat toddlers with autism aged 18 – 48 months. The model uses intensive play-based activities embedded into daily routines.
Acknowledged as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs in 2012, ESDM is designed to enhance language, non-verbal communication, self-care and motor skills. A number of published studies have demonstrated improvement in the cognitive skills, IQ, language and social behaviour of young children with autism enrolled in the programme.
Clinical trials for children’s autism
The brain and mind experts at Re:Cognition Health recognise that neurodiversity provides fantastic benefits, as evidenced by the numerous attributes and skills exhibited by individuals living very successful lives with autism.
However, individuals with autism can find certain social situations challenging, to varying degrees. While some individuals are content and very adept at managing these situations, others struggle and seek help and support to optimize their performance, achievements and everyday life and relationships.
Clinical trials are essential for the development of new healthcare treatments. Every medication on the market has been subjected to a clinical trial. Without these trials, new medications cannot be developed.
Hundreds of thousands of people participate in clinical studies every year. In fact, over 870,000 people participated in health and social care research in the UK last year, helping to treat symptoms, conditions, cure disease, save lives, contribute to vital research and advance our knowledge.
Autism currently has no approved medical treatments for its core symptoms. Re:Cognition Health is currently providing the opportunity for children with a diagnosis of autism (aged 2-17 years), or suspected diagnosis, to take part in a clinical trial for a potential new medical treatment. There is no cost to being on the study, which also provides the assessment to make and / or confirm a diagnosis.
