Gretton School warmly welcomes autistic children and young people aged from 5-19 years old, as weekly boarders or as day students.
Every student at Gretton has a diagnosis of autism or Asperger’s syndrome and every student is unique.
The team that works here understands that consistent daily routines and staffing help to keep anxiety at a minimum and ensure that students feel safe and confident in their surroundings.
High staff-to-student ratio
They have a high staff-to-student ratio and classes are small and personal – the teachers, teaching assistants and boarding team know each of their students really well and employ the best strategies to support them in their everyday school and residential life.
In addition to day places, Gretton School offers weekly boarding placements during term-time. Gretton School’s warm and homely boarding houses allow young people to stay from Monday to Friday during term time. The main focus is on making sure each young person feels safe and cared for.
A maximum of three young people live together in a house or bungalow within the school grounds. Every boarder has their own bedroom, which they are encouraged to decorate as their own, with help from their staff team, and access to shared bathrooms with a bath and shower. Each home also has a spacious communal living area plus a dining room and kitchen facilities.
Benefits of boarding
The benefits to being a boarder at Gretton School are plentiful:
- A waking day curriculum provides continued support after school hours with communication, social development and self-regulation.
- Independent skill building – students plan meals, shop for food and prepare meals for themselves and others.
- They have a cleaning rota, taking care of their own space, further developing skills for independent living in the future.
What they say
“You guys have been a family to me, one that I needed, if I didn’t come to this school I would never be as happy as I am now. You guys came to me when my life was falling apart, now I have dreams… and the skills to achieve them.” – Student
“The young people here will inspire and reward you beyond belief in the moments when you can step back and see the positive relationships you have built.” – Staff
