BLINNK and the Vacuum of Space is an out-of-this-world Virtual Reality adventure designed specifically for autistic players.
Autistic gamer in mind for every design decision
The mischievous Groobs have escaped in an unfortunate lab accident and they are now causing chaos all over Norpopolis. Using your trusty Vacuumiser 5000, you travel around the space station, meeting the locals and completing tasks as you help friendly robot BLINNK recapture them – before Mr Norp finds out!
Autistic people love playing video games, but video games are not created for autistic people. The colours are too bright, the sound too loud, the gameplay too confusing. In BLINNK every design decision is taken with the autistic gamer in mind. It incorporates multiple features and elements to make it easier to play and enjoy, supporting the choices they make in the virtual world.
You never lose
There is no fail state and no pressure from time limits. You never lose. You can skip challenges, repeat tasks, do what you want and still progress. You are in full control to go at your own speed.
When you move to a new level, a briefing shows you where you are going, what it looks like, and who you’ll meet there.
If you become over-stimulated, just hit the smartwatch and come straight out of the game to a calm relaxing space where you can recover. Then hit the watch again and rejoin when you are ready.
You can fine-tune a wide range of sensory inputs using the Accessibility Menu, from colour, to volume, to haptic feedback, allowing you to individualise the experience according to your own sensitivities.
No need for masking
Autistic people are often proud of their autism – it’s a characteristic to be supported, not a flaw to be fixed. When they are immersed in a virtual world, the need to mask and fit in with the expectations of others is no longer present. They can have fun, build their confidence, and just enjoy being themselves.
BLINNK and the Vacuum of Space is recommended for autistic people 13+, and also parents or anyone who knows an autistic person who might enjoy gaming.
It is available on Meta AppLab at https://ocul.us/3HGoOsx, and also on Playstation2VR, Steam and Viveport.
