The Management of ADHD in Children and Young People
Edited by Val Harpin
This book is an accessible and practical guide on all aspects of assessment of children and young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and successful management of their care.
The multidisciplinary team of authors discusses referral, assessment and diagnosis, psychological management, pharmacological management, and co-existing conditions, as well as ADHD in the school setting.
Holistic approach
The book goes further than just medical management in ADHD.
Rather, it provides a holistic approach with the child or young person at its core and the family and multi-professional team supporting them. Case scenarios are included that vividly bring these topics to life.
- The only ADHD guide to include input from paediatricians, child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists, and specialist nursing teams
- Examines coexisting difficulties and how they affect management
- Features new research on girls with ADHD
- Discusses ADHD and substance misuse
- Describes how to support young people in transition to adult services
A book reviewer’s opinion
‘Many of the chapters provide case studies or dialogues with parents and children themselves that offer perspectives that might otherwise be missed. One aspect of the book that I found particularly interesting was the reflections as the child reaches the transition years. Youths with ADHD have even more difficulty “finding themselves” than other teens with increased prevalence of substance abuse and misuse, issues with judgment when driving, misunderstanding the criminal justice system, and associated stressors leading to anxiety, depression and self-harm. Having a better understanding of the teenage years can increase awareness by both clinicians and parents of potential hurdles in the child’s life. This book was a very good read with great references and websites for the average parent and the clinician.’
