Day and residential placements
Each school provides day and residential placement options for children and young people with autism, speech, language and communication needs, and learning difficulties who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Residential placements are ideal for children and young people who would benefit from the specialist support the schools provide, but live too far away to travel to the school daily, or have other reasons that make a residential placement more suitable.
The schools work closely with the SEND teams in the child’s local authority, as well as parents/carers, to ensure they have a clear understanding of the young person’s individualised needs. From this, they provide a bespoke curriculum offer for each child, enabling them to have the best opportunity to meet or exceed outcomes identified in their EHCP, whether that be an academic, vocational, or personal development target.
High praise from school inspectors
Inspectors at Alderwasley Hall School praised this: ‘Pupils follow highly individualised programmes. This means that pupils work on precisely what they need to learn next. The school’s individualised approach to the curriculum supports pupils to achieve well. For example, many make the progress necessary in mathematics to be able to take suitable qualifications.’
The importance of the environment created at the school is fundamental in helping children and young people succeed. This was recognised by inspectors at each school:
Alderwasley Hall School – ‘Pupils flourish at this school in an atmosphere that is calm and purposeful.’
Rowden House School – ‘Rowden House School is a magical place to learn. The school is a calm, positive, and orderly environment.’
Pegasus School – ‘The school is a place of joy and happiness. Pupils appreciate the school’s extensive outdoor spaces, including the woodland area.’
Maple View School – ‘The school provides a warm and highly caring learning environment. The school runs like clockwork. Pupils are happy and their learning is maximised.’
