Seashell Trust is a national charity supporting children and young people with complex educational and communication needs.
Young people referred to us all have severe to profound learning disabilities with additional communication needs, including autism and sensory impairments.
Through our innovative school, college and short breaks programmes, we help children and young people to develop their communication skills, become more independent and be recognised as valued and valuable members of their local community.
Royal School Manchester and Royal College Manchester
Royal School Manchester, a non-maintained special school (‘Outstanding’, Ofsted 2012), accepts boys and girls aged 2-19 and Royal College Manchester, an independent specialist FE college (‘Outstanding’, Ofsted 2013), accepts young men and women aged 19-25.
Both school and college offer day and residential placements as well as overnight, weekend and week-long short breaks for students and members of the community.
Our innovative ‘Waking hours curriculum’ and embedded therapy make the most of opportunities to practice daily living skills, mobility and independence, and our care teams work closely with families and education staff to help students bring their learning into their home lives.
School curriculum
Our school curriculum takes a sensory approach and is focused on physical development, communication, independence and life skills.
School students with ASC follow our Transition programme, making transitions between activities, exploring new environments, and preparing for their transition into adult life.
College support
College students are supported to make decisions about their lives and communicate them in a variety of settings, including at home and on work experience placements.
Some students may progress to our adapted supported internship programme, a vocational course which takes place in the community and prepares young people for progression to supported employment, and the college job coach continues to support leavers and their employers for up to six months after their graduation.
Facilities
From our 90-acre site in the beautiful Cheshire countryside, we work with young people and families from across the UK.
Our facilities include hydrotherapy and swimming pools, a state-of-the-art audiology clinic, a number of sensory rooms, and an IFI-accredited fitness suite.
Our CADS (Children’s Able and Disabled Sports) clubs and holiday programmes welcome members of the community of all abilities as well as current students to compete and play together.
Our vision
It is our vision that all children and young people live safe, happy and active lives in which they can participate meaningfully in the wider community.
