Beechwood College is looking forward to attending the Autism Show at the NEC in Birmingham on 24th & 25th June.
Dr Vaughn Price will share the benefits of narrative therapy and role-playing games to augment CBT
After the success of a talk at the show three years ago, the College’s Principal Clinical Psychologist, Dr Vaughn Price, has been invited back to present on the Friday the College’s experiences of using narrative therapy and role-playing games to augment Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
The College is also hosting a stand where staff will be on hand to discuss the education and care provision the College offers. With the help of the students, the stand is also planning interactive activities that will showcase some of the College’s education activities. There will even be the opportunity to take part in a virtual quiz with instant prizes.
Anyone who is attending the show is encouraged to drop by and have a chat and get involved. You will be able to find us at Stand B1.
Education & care tailored for complex needs
Beechwood College, near Cardiff, offers inspirational education to young adults with complex ASD. The College advocates an integrated, person-centred learning approach involving the active participation of the extensive education, clinical and residential teams. The College has both day and residential students and provides each student with a learning environment tailored to their specific needs.
The College ensures students are supported to access transferable, meaningful learning opportunities in a way that takes account of their unique learning style and the impact their ASD has upon them. A consistent approach to educational support, based upon the principles of TEACCH, PECS and Makaton, is embedded in the College’s ethos.
Delivery of activities is differentiated for all students; however, the underpinning aim is always to introduce learning which will build towards a more independent future.
Activities that aim to build confidence and promote successful life skills
To help students develop as confident adults, reach their full potential, and integrate happily into the community, each student is supported to explore their surroundings; whether it be cinema visits, bowling, trips to the local leisure centre, meals out or day trips to theme parks, shopping, hiking and even camping.
Students are also encouraged to develop their citizenship skills and develop ties with their local community.
For example, during World Autism Acceptance Week in April students at the College took part in random acts of kindness around the local community. They decorated plant pots and other items to leave as gifts locally along with cards raising autism awareness and promoting an autism-friendly community.
Enterprise and work skills
Encouraging enterprise and work skills is also a priority at the College. Recently the students launched their own e-shop on Esty, enjoying designing and producing a constantly changing array of gifts that have been a big commercial success.
Regardless of ability, Beechwood College’s aim is to ensure every student will leave with greater confidence having acquired a range of skills which allows them to transition successfully into the wider community.
