The Owl Centre was founded in Oxford in 2011 by top Speech and Language Therapist and author of the ‘Small Talk’ series of speech-boosting books, Nicola Lathey.
It began with 5 paediatric Speech and Language Therapists, but quickly developed as new therapists from across the UK, offering different skill-sets, joined the team.
Today, The Owl Centre has a team of approximately 500 therapists from more than 30 disciplines, who are able to help children and adults. However, its dominant specialism has always been helping people with Autism.
NHS assessments
In 2017, The Owl Centre took on its first NHS contract, involving the diagnostic assessment of 100 people (50 adults and 50 children). Since 2019, we have been developing our bespoke IT platform (suitably called ‘The Nest’ for our ‘Owls’ to use!) which enables us to manage large-scale ASD assessment projects for the NHS with relative ease, and we’ve been fortunate to be offered many further NHS contracts from across the country for both children and adult assessments. The trusts that we’re currently working with include Greater Manchester, Gloucestershire, Norfolk and Hertfordshire, as well as providing assessments for students at universities such as Imperial College, London.
Independent assessments
Of course, we also offer ASD assessments for individuals who wish to go down the independent route, and we pride ourselves on our professionalism and the relative speed that we can help someone; from the time of their first enquiry to receiving their completed assessment report and feedback.
Therapies
Besides assessments, we have a strong team of therapists who can support people who have already received a diagnosis. This includes Speech and Language Therapists, of course, but also clinicians who specialise in Autism Support, Sensory Integration-trained OTs and psychotherapy.
